Theater

I began photographing theater in New York because I discovered two spaces in Brooklyn that would allow me to do it in a personal way. Those spaces—the Brooklyn Center for Theater Research, and Adult Film—and the people that occupy them, have been the subjects of a kind of “hyper-intimate” theater that finds its audiences in basements and living rooms.
Actors at the Center and Adult Film often perform so close to the audience that you feel written into the play; they even sit in the middle of the audience during their performances sometimes. You get immersed in the world of the actors in a way that is akin to an interactive experience. What adds to this experience, is the fact that most of these plays are about interpersonal relationships.

My interests in theater lie in what happens offstage just as much as what happens onstage. After the plays, I tend to photograph the actors, most of whom I’m friends with, hanging out at bars in Brooklyn, or at parties hosted by the companies. This blurring of their real lives with their performances persists throughout my theater work.
