FILM
Shooting behind the scenes on film sets has been a steady way for me to make new images. I started out by working on a few music videos; shooting for directors, Marysia Makowska, Powered By Wind, and my friend Abbie Jones. When I moved to New York in 2022, I met one of my favorite directors, Alex Ross Perry, at a screening of The Color Wheel (2011) at The Roxy, and I started shooting on his sets soon after. Two of the productions were music videos for Soccer Mommy and Bully, bands that I know from Nashville. On-set photography is stimulating, often poetic in the way the scenes are setup by the production equipment. There’s a creative freedom that comes with this type of photography. Everything is already lit, and no one is expected to pose, so I feel free to capture whatever I want.
Cinema has long been an influence on me. Stories that are told with intentional compositions and lighting have been beacons of knowledge for me, for example, The Night of the Hunter (1955). I’ve grown to appreciate the style of German Expressionism and incorporate elements of it in my work. When I’m on sets, I stay silent and out of the way. The most important thing is getting the film made, and making the crew feel comfortable. I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing actors and directors in the past few years, and I’m looking forward to working with more.
