Early Street, 2018–2020
These photographs began to cumulate after my move to Philadelphia from Nashville in 2018. I was curious, open, and young at twenty three. I had recently equipped myself with two Fuji cameras, the X-Pro 1 and the X100 S, a diversion from my trusted Nikon D90. These new cameras were fast and intuitive, allowing me to instinctively absorb whatever I saw around me. An “extension of the eye” they way Bresson would descibe it.
I wanted to soak in the world.
Without knowing I would place intimacy at the center of my work, I just photographed people that pulled my heart strings. Eventually I grew despondent of street photography because it felt arbritary, and I saw no clear path forward. The actuality of shooting strangers was increasingly detached, but I held onto the candid approach; the intuitiveness carried over to scenes with my friends. This time of shooting, although brief, helped form the basis of my style today.
